Rising Pune have catapulted themselves into the IPL playoffs, thanks to an exceptional bowling display.

In doing so, they have ended the finals hopes of Kings XI Punjab.

Steve Smith won the toss, and sent Punjab in to bat, which proved to be an excellent decision.

New Zealand international Martin Guptill was removed first ball, and sadly there was no returning from that for Maxwell's side.

A steady flow of wickets, including two each to Aussies Dan Christian and Adam Zampa, meant that Kings XI were all out for 73 off just 15.5 overs.

Shaun Marsh managed just 10 off 13 balls before he was dismissed, while Maxwell failed to provide a captain's knock, being removed for a duck.

Zampa finished with impressive figures of 2/22 off 3.5 overs, while Christian took 2/10 from just two overs.

At times small chases can be difficult, however a solid 41-run opening partnership between Ajinkya Rahane and Rahul Tripathi meant that Rising Pune would have few problems.

Steve Smith came in after the loss of Tripathi and closed the game out for the Supergiants. He would finish on 15 from 18 balls.

Glenn Maxwell bowled himself for two overs, and finished with figures of 0/15.

The win locks in a finals place for Rising Pune, whilst simultaneously knocking Punjab out of the race.

Despite his side not reaching the next stage, Maxwell's first stint as captain should be seen as a relative success. Punjab only missed the playoffs by one place, while Maxwell's on-field performance was good.

He finished with 310 runs at an average of 31. His strike rate was the most notable part of his record, it finished at 173.

Bowling wise, Maxwell took seven wickets at 17.85. Not a terrible effort from someone who was barely given the ball in the Australian summer.
