Sri Lankan fast bowler Chamika Karunaratne has escaped a one-year ban for misconduct during his side's T20 World Cup campaign in Australia.

Instead, the Sri Lankan cricket board has handed the 26-year-old a $5000 fine, while a one-year suspended ban has also been handed down.

The cricket board wouldn't reveal the exact details of Karunaratne's actions, stating only he had failed to adhere to "several clauses" in his cricketing contract.

In a statement, the Sri Lankan cricket board were urged to "strongly warn the player to refrain from further violations and to impose a punishment that will not have an impact on his cricketing career" by a three-person panel.

He is the second Sri Lankan player in a number of weeks to be punished for misconduct in the T20 World Cup.

Earlier this month, Australian police charged Sri Lankan opening batsman Danushka Gunathilaka with four counts of sexual assault.
