The Melbourne stars have called on Essendon all-rounder Tom O'Donnell as Marcus Stoinis' injury replacement player for Saturday's Melbourne bash

O'Donnell, the son of former Australian all-rounder Simon, has been named in the 15-player squad for the match at Marvel Stadium, which was confirmed by the club on Friday.

The 26-year-old was previously contracted with the Renegades on a rookie deal, with O'Donnell in line to potentially make his BBL debut against his former club when they go head-to-head with the Stars.

Bowling left-arm fast and batting right-handed, O'Donnell, like his father, is an all-rounder and will look to offer a similar role to what Stoinis provides, as the Australian white-ball specialist nurses a low-grade hamstring injury.

Stoinis suffered the ailment in his side's loss to the Sydney Sixers earlier this month.

He joins star teammate Glenn Maxwell on the sidelines amid a struggling season for the Stars, who carry just three wins into their clash with Victorian rivals the Renegades.

The Stars collected a victory over the Strikers on Thursday night to keep their finals chances alive, with David Hussey's side needing a near-perfect end to the tournament to book a spot in the post-season.

Saturday's clash at Docklands will commence at 7:30pm AEDT.
