Melbourne Stars captain Glenn Maxwell could be set to join a majority of his teammates in quarantine as the big-hitting batsman fears he may have contracted COVID-19.

The Stars have been substantially undermanned in their past two matches, having to play fill-in players from Premier level cricket as roughly 12 players having tested positive to the virus in the past week

Maxwell was one of the fortunate few to avoid the virus and be able to play in the Stars' clashes against the Scorchers and Renegades, however his luck may have run out.

According to Fox Sports' Kath Loughnan, Maxwell is now awaiting the result of a PCR test after noticing symptoms of COVID-19, believing he has contracted the virus.

The 33-year-old has been persistently tested throughout the course of the BBL|11 campaign and would be deemed as a close contact to his teammates that are currently isolating.

The Stars are scheduled to face the Strikers on Friday and will likely welcome the return of several key names who are currently sidelined due to league protocols.

Should Maxwell test positive to COVID-19, he will miss this week's match and next Monday's double-up fixture against Adelaide.

The veteran batsman would likely make his return for the Melbourne Derby against the renegades on January 13.
