23-year-old spinner Mitchell Swepson may have been hopeful of a selection in Australia's touring Test squad of India next month, but he certainly wasn't expecting it.

Despite a glowing endorsement from one of the best spinners to play the game in Shane Warne over the past month, Swepson said he didn't believe he had a massive chance in gaining selection, and has a certain someone to thank for all of their kind words.

"It's awesome to get that sort of feedback from the best leg-spinner we've ever seen play the game," Swepson told Optus Sport.

"To be honest, I didn't really know how to take it. I was just so shocked.

"I'm sure when I meet up with him, I'll have to give him a beer or shake his hand and thank him for all his comments.

"It's good to know there's people out there who like what I'm doing."

Since hearing of his addition to the touring squad on Sunday Swepson hasn't been able to catch up with Warne just yet, but did get some congratulatory messages from some other big names in Australian cricket.

"My phone has been going non-stop," he said.

"I've had a couple of surprise messages; one from the captain Steve Smith, a couple from some others spinners like Nathan Lyon and Fawad Ahmed, so it was really awesome to hear those congratulations from those blokes.

"And obviously friends and family have been constantly contacting me so it's been a big few hours."

Swepson comes into the Test squad having played just 14 First-class matches in his career, and has taken 41 wickets at 32.82.
