The Sydney Thunder are reportedly targeting South African star, AB de Villiers for the upcoming Big Bash season.

Following the 12-month doping violation suspension of West Indian Andre Russell, the Thunder are on the lookout for another import and de Villiers tops the list.

As well as the former Proteas skipper, Eoin Morgan and Carlos Brathwaite are also possible targets, according to The Daily Telegraph.

The Thunder have previously sounded out de Villiers, but thus far failed to secure his signature.

However, what does play into Sydney's hands, is the fact de Villiers, who sat out the side's recent series against England, is increasingly likely to retire from Test cricket to focus on the shorter formats of the game, meaning he will be available for the BBL.

The seventh edition of the Big Bash begins on December 19, with the Sydney Sixes and Sydney Thunder kicking off the season at Spotless Stadium.
