A 17-year-old leg-spinner has achieved one of the rarest feats available to cricketers, picking up 10 wickets in an innings during a Sydney grade match.
Playing for Sutherland – the club that produced Test players such as Steve Smith, Glenn McGrath, Stuart Clark and Phil Jaques – in a second grade game against reigning premiers Sydney University, Devlin Malone put in a phenomenal effort to take every single wicket in the opposition’s second innings, finishing with figures of 10-115 from 29 overs.
Having already picked up six wickets in Sydney Uni’s first innings, Malone’s match figures were a scarcely believable 16-138, helping Sutherland secure a six-wicket victory against the odds.
Amazingly this wasn’t Malone’s first historic achievement in his short grade cricket career.
As a 16-year-old last summer, the leggie became the first player in the Sydney competition to take three wickets in his opening over in first grade.
