Pakistan and India, both achieved Independence from the British Raj in 1947. Pakistan's independence day is on 14th August whereas India celebrates its independence on 15th August.

War and major conflicts have kept the countries apart but if there is one thing that can unite the 1.6 billion people living in both countries, it is cricket.

Pakistan and India have played numerous hair-raisers but here we look at Zero Wicket's top five Pakistan and India ODI clashes.

Quetta, 1978, bilateral series

Result: India won by 4 runs.

Let's start things with the first-ever ODI played between India and Pakistan. The match was played on October 1 at the Ayub National Stadium. ODI cricket was still in its early days and this match was scheduled to be a 40 overs per side instead of the 50 we are now used to.

India batted first and scored 170 for the loss of 7 wickets in their 40 overs. Mohinder Amarnath top scored with 51 followed by his brother, Surinder who made 37.

A useful knock by Dilip Vengsarkar (34) took India to 170. Pakistan's bowling was economical with all their bowlers having an economy rate of below 5 with Sarfaraz Nawaz the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/34 in his 8 overs.

Coming out to chase, Pakistan's batting lineup didn't stand up according to their caliber. Majid Khan top-scored with 50 and Zaheer Abbass scored 26 runs. Some late cameos from Nawaz (14 not out of 13 balls) and Wasim Bari (11 not out of 13 balls) gave Pakistanis a winning chance but they fell agonizingly short by 4 runs. Pakistan's score was 166/8 in their 40 overs.

Mohinder Amarnath took 2 wickets for 38 runs and along with his 51 runs knock was awarded the Player of the Match award.

Brisbane, 2000, Carlton & United Series

Result: Pakistan won by 2 wickets.

Australia hosted India and Pakistan in the 1999-2000 cricket season for their annual tri-series. The second match of the series was played at the GABBA on January 10.

India won the toss and elected to bat first. It wasn't going to be easy to score runs freely against this strong Pakistani bowling attack and it proved so. Only four Indian batters made it to double figures with opener Sourav Ganguly (61) and number six Robin Singh (50) scoring half centuries. India managed to crawl their way to 195 all out. All the Pakistani bowlers had good bowling figures with the speedster Shoaib Akhtar snatching the limelight with figures of 3/19 in his 8 overs.

Pakistan was fined one over for a slow over rate and had to chase the target in 49 overs. Pakistan being Pakistan, they made a mess of their run chase when India had them pinned down at 6 for 71 in the 22nd over. A rearguard effort from Yousuf Youhana (63) gave the run chase some life. He was well supported by captain Wasim Akram who scored 24.

India wouldn't go down without a fight and when Youhana was out for 63, the scorecard showed 8/153. Pakistan still needed 43 runs with only 5.1 overs left and the tail-endless on the crease.

Surprisingly, they go to the equation of 1 needed off 1 ball with Saqlain Mushtaq scoring 23 not out and Waqar Younis 13 not out. The winning run came through a leg-bye as Pakistan won a low-scoring thriller. Youhana was named the Player of the Match.

Dhaka, 2014, Asia Cup

Result: Pakistan won by 1 wicket.

The 6th match of the 2014 edition of the Asia Cup was played in Dhaka on March 2.

Pakistan won the toss and elected to field first. Given the strength of this Indian batting order, Pakistan did pretty well to restrict them to 245 in their 50 overs. Rohit Sharma (56) and Ambati Rayudu (58) made patient half centuries before a late order blitz from Ravindra Jadeja helped them to the total.

Jadeja scored 52 not out with the help of four boundaries and two sixes. The Pakistani bowling was excellent with their premier spinner Saeed Ajmal having the best figures of 3/40.

The Pakistani openers started pretty well and when the first wicket fell, the scorecard showed a healthy score of 71 in the 11th over. They were kept in the chase by a patient 75 from Mohammad Hafeez.

He was given fine support from Sohaib Maqsood (38). A mini collapse saw Pakistan lose 3 wickets for 1 run, leaving the last man Junaid Khan on strike with Pakistan needing 10 off 5 balls. A precious single was taken by Khan that set the stage for an Afridi classic. He slogged his next 2 balls for sixes to give Pakistan an exciting one-wicket win.

Hafeez was named the Player of the Match for scoring 75 runs, taking 2 wickets and 2 catches. A brilliant all-round display that was overshadowed by the two sixes.

Karachi, 2004, bilateral series

Result: India won by 5 runs.

India and Pakistan hadn't faced each other in a full bilateral series since 1989 until Pakistan welcomed India for a historic tour in 2004, and what a way to start the series. A high-scoring thriller that set the tone for an amazing series to follow.

Pakistan won the toss in the first match of this ODI series and decided to field first. A flat batting pitch and some wayward bowling by the Pakistanis laid the platform. An opening assault by Virender Sehwag (79 of 57 balls) was carried forward by a classy knock by Rahul Dravid.

Dravid was unlucky to miss out on a ton when he got by bowled by Shoaib Akhtar on 99. 40s from Sourav Ganguly and Mohammad Kaif made India score 349 in their 50 overs. 38 extras were gifted by the Pakistani bowlers who had a torrid time at the National Stadium.

The pick of the bowler was Akhtar who took 2 for 55 and went for less than 6 runs per over when his other fast bowling partners had economy rates of 7.50+ each.

Not an easy chase, it got worst when Pakistan lost both its openers inside the 10 overs. Then came the change, a brilliant partnership of 135 between the two mainstays of Pakistan batting, Inzamam ul Haq and Mohammad Yousuf.

Haq scored a brilliant 122 and was ably supported by Yousuf (73) and Younis Khan (46). The equation went to 9 off the last over which then became 6 off the final ball. Ashish Nehra was able to keep his cool and India won by 5 runs.

Inzamam ul Haq was named the Player of the match for his sublime century even though his team lost by the barest of margins.

Sharjah, 1986, Austral-Asia Cup

Result: Pakistan won by 1 wicket.

The 1986 Austral-Asia Cup was a five-nation tournament played between Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The final was played between arch-rivals India and Pakistan at Sharjah on April 18.

Pakistan elected to field first in the final. The top 3 Indian batters seemed to be in full command when the score read 1/216. Kris Srikanth scored 75, Sunil Gavaskar 92 and Dilip Vengsarkar made 50.

A dramatic collapse saw India go from 1/216 to 7/245 in their 50 overs. A good comeback by the Pakistani bowlers for whom Wasim Akram had figures of 3/42.

While chasing this target, the Pakistani top and middle order kept them in the hunt with useful 20s and 30s but it was one man who made sure Pakistan won't get off track. He was the star Pakistani batsman, Javed Miandad.

He was supported well by Mohsin Khan (36) and Abdul Qadir (34). A collapse, similar to what India had created some problems for the Pakistanis. The equation went down to 4 off the last ball with 1 wicket in hand.

On strike was Miandad and the bowler was Chetan Sharma. Miandad converted a "planned" yorker into a low full toss and deposited it into the stands for one of the more memorable last-ball maximums in cricket history.

Miandad was named the player of the match for his not-out innings of 116 which propelled him to the status of a national hero.
