Big Bash umpire Shawn Craig has admitted his decision to not dismiss Perth Scorchers batsman Sam Whiteman last night was a mistake.

Whiteman appeared to have edged the ball in Scott Boland's first over for the Stars last night, but Craig didn't believe the sound was bat-on-ball.

“It was a really muffled noise and so I didn’t think it was bat,” Craig said on Optus Sport’s Umpire’s Verdict.

“I got it wrong."

“He (Whiteman) has hit it, there’s no doubt I got it wrong and it’s one of those ones I wish I could take back.”

Whiteman was on 13 at the time, but was unable to capitalise on the decision, only making a further 18 runs.

At the time of the incident it appeared as though Whiteman was starting to walk from the ground, but he returned to the crease once he realised it was given not-out.

Craig's umpiring partner Sam Nogajski said it's dangerous trying to read a players body language.

“You can read batsmen but I think that’s not a good business when you’re trying to make up your mind on decisions,” he said.

“You stick to your guns. Don’t try and read players, you’ll get yourself into trouble.”
