during day four of the Sheffield Shield match between Victoria and Tasmania at Melbourne Cricket Ground on November 16, 2017 in Melbourne, Australia.

Victorian batsman Glenn Maxwell has been added to Australia's 13-man squad for the first Test as cover for David Warner.

Warner injured his neck while taking a catch a training on Tuesday afternoon and was forced to leave the session early.

Both Warner himself and captain Steve Smith are confident the opening batsman will be fit to take part in the first Test, however, selectors are taking no chances, bringing in Maxwell as a potential replacement.

Maxwell was initially left out of Australia's squad for the first two Tests, despite playing in the Aussies' last two Test tours in Bangladesh and India scoring his maiden Test hundred against India mid-year.

The 29-year-old has played seven Tests for Australia, scoring 339 runs at an average of 26. He also has eight wickets at Test level.
