Victorian veteran Cameron White has slammed the Australian selectors for picking a "development team" to tour New Zealand.

White, who was last week voted the domestic player of the year, believes national selectors are choosing players based on a "hunch" rather than domestic form.

"Right now, it seems that the Australian team at some stages is a development team," White told RSN927 radio.

"For me, playing for Australia isn't about getting a chance to develop. Domestic cricket is where that happens."

Young batsmen Sam Heazlett was chosen ahead of White for the ODI squad despite not yet featuring in a one-day match for his state of Queensland.

Comparatively, White scored 457 runs for Victoria in October's Matador Cup, at an average of 76.16.

"I'm a little worried, to be honest, about the importance the selectors are putting on domestic cricket. It worries me for the future of Australian cricket," White said.

"You can get picked to play for Australia in any format out of Big Bash, really," he said.

"It doesn't make a lot of sense."

White will captain Victoria in the absence of Matthew Wade when the Sheffield Shield resumes on Wednesday.
