India has taken a 2-0 lead in the best of five ODI series against Australia, with a crushing 50-run win at Eden Gardens overnight.

The hosts won the toss and elected to bat, with Nathan Coulter-Nile striking early removing Rohit Sharma for just seven in the sixth over.

Captain Virat Kohli (92) and opener Ajinkya Rahane (55) then shared in a 101-run stand to bat India a strong position.

However, following the removal of Rahane, Australia managed to fight their way back into the match with a string of wickets that saw Manish Pandey (3) and MS Dhoni (5) removed cheaply, while Kedar Jadhav (24), Hardik Pandya (20) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (20) all failed to go on with their starts.

Australia managed to bowl India all out for 252 with the final ball of the innings, with Kane Richardson and Coulter-Nile each taking three wickets, while Pat Cummins and Ashton Agar claimed one wicket each.

In reply, Australia never got going, bowled out for 202 in the 44th over.

Openers David Waner (1) and Hilton Cartwright (1) were both dismissed inside the first five overs, before Steve Smith and Travis Head went about restoring some respectability to the scorecard.

Smith scored 59, while Head hit a run-a-ball 39. However, as has so often been the case for Australia in recent times, after their dismissals, a collapse ensued.

Australia lost the last six wickets for 64 runs, which saw an historic hat-trick from Kuldeep Yadav.

Yadav dismissed Matthew Wade (2), Ashton Agar and Pat Cummins in the 33rd over to claim India's first ODI hat-trick since 1991 and he became the third Indian to claim an ODI hat-trick.

All-rounder Marcus Stoinis did all he could to steal an unlikely win, smashing an unbeaten 62 from 65 balls, however, he ran out of partners, with the tourists eventually bowled out for 202.

The third game of the series is in Indore on Sunday.
