Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow have put on a clinic for Yorkshire overnight, smashing a 117-year-old record thanks to a mammoth 372 run partnership.

The fourth wicket partnership is the highest ever recorded at Headingly and broke the record for the highest ever partnership by a Yorkshire pair, which has stood since 1899.

It was a perfect tune up for Root (190no) and Bairstow (198), with Sri Lanka taking on England in the first Test of their upcoming series on Thursday week.

The pair came together at 3-45 in the 11th over, after Surrey scored 330 in their first innings.

However, the England internationals then picked Surrey's bowling attack apart, motoring along at 5.55 runs per over during their 67 over partnership, which last until Bairstow was eventually removed when the score was 417.
