Australian T20 captain Aaron Finch isn't rushing into a decision over his retirement.

Australia were bundled out of the T20 World Cup on home soil at the end of the Super 12 round this week, with a loss to New Zealand, a washout against England and a failure to improve net run rate against Sri Lanka and Ireland coming back to bite the hosts.

The absence of Australia from the semi-finals completes a 12-month turnaround after Finch lifted the T20 World Cup aloft at the end of last year's tournament in the United Arab Emirates.

It also followed Finch's decision to retire from ODI cricket at the end of a series against New Zealand in September, however, speaking to Channel 7 from Melbourne Airport, he said he would play the Big Bash League for the Melbourne Renegades this summer before deciding on his future in the shortest form of the game.

"No, I'm not going to retire. Not just yet," Finch told Seven as he arrived back at Melbourne airport on Sunday.

"I'll play Big Bash and see where we sit after that, but I'm still enjoying playing cricket, playing T20."

Finch won't be rushed into a decision, with Test cricket (home series against the West Indies and South Africa, as well as away series against India and England), and preparations for the ODI World Cup with series against England (home), India (away) and Afghanistan (away) to be played before Australia's next T20 assignment against South Africa next August and September.

"There's not another international T20 until August, so there's quite a long break," he said.

"Still plenty of time to be able to weigh all that up. It's been a pretty good ride regardless of what happens."

Finch could yet become a T20 gun for hire if he does decide to hang up the international boots, although his form has struggled somewhat in the international arena over the last 12 months.

Should Finch have played his last T20 international, he would finish his career with 3120 runs at an average of 34.28 and strike rate of 142.53 from 103 games for his country in the format.

All up, he has scored 10964 T20 runs at an average of 33.63 and strike rate of 139.31 from 367 matches.
