Australian star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is set to be ruled out for the entire Big Bash League campaign and Australia's fixtures for the remainder of the home summer after suffering a broken leg in a freak accident.

Maxwell has previously spoken out about his ambitions to chase a Test recall on Australia's four-Test of India next February and March, however, that appears to have now all but gone up in smoke.

Maxwell is expected to be sidelined for between three and four months with the injury, which means, even at the best case scenario, he will likely be ruled out through the Indian tour.

More immediately, it means he won't be available for either the Sheffield Shield or one-day cup for Victoria, or the Big Bash League with the Melbourne Stars.

The club captain, Maxwell is one of the all-time best BBL players, but won't be able to take his spot this summer in a devastating blow for the men in green after they missed the finals with a sixth-placed finish last year, winning just half of their games.

Club general manager Blair Crouch suggested Maxwell will continue to be a key part of the club during his injury recovery.

“Glenn is obviously a huge part of the Melbourne Stars and we wish him well in his recovery," Crouch said in a club statement confirming the injury.

“He will continue to be a key part of the club during the start of the season as he works his way back to full fitness and we look forward to seeing him soon.”

It's understood Maxwell was at a 50th birthday party and slipped while running in the backyard before being trapped under another guest.

"Glenn is in good spirits. It was an unfortunate accident and we feel for Glenn in the circumstances given he was in great touch in his last few games," Australia chairman of selectors George Bailey said in a statement.

"Glenn is a critical part of our white ball structure and we will continue to support him through his recovery and rehabilitation."

Maxwell was due to be part of Australia's squad to play England in three ODIs next week, but has been replaced by Sean Abbott.
