Ben McDermott smashes a boundary during the Big Bash League match between the Melbourne Renegades and the Hobart Hurricanes at Etihad Stadium on January 12, 2017 in Melbourne, Australia.

Both Melbourne franchises have landed the opening two selections in the inaugural Big Bash Draft, with the Renegades holding the prized first selection.

Introduced ahead of the 12th edition of the domestic competition, the draft will see each club recruit international players from a pool of 170 names, with 28 already confirmed by the league.

The Renegades will get the first pick, able to select any nominated player that isn't re-signed to their respective clubs as a retention pick from last season.

Entering the draft lottery with a 50 per cent chance of landing atop the order, the Renegades drew the opening pick and will hold all the power at the draft.

The Stars snatched the second selection, before the Heat, Sixers and Strikers ran out the top five.

Despite holding the strongest chance to land the fourth overall pick, the Hurricanes slid to last in the queue, trailing the Thunder and Scorchers in seventh and sixth respectively.

Clubs will be able to select from 'platinum' tier players in the first round of the draft, with the league set to distinguish which nominees fall under the band and earn a salary of $340,000.

The second round will see platinum-eligible and gold tier ($260,000) players available before the draft order switches into a serpentine order, with the Hurricanes to hold Picks 16 and 17.

Round 3 will have players of gold and silver bands ($175,000) available, before clubs will only have silver and bronze ($100,000) players to choose from in the fourth and final round.

Speaking to cricket.com.au, Renegades general manager James Rosengarten expressed his delight in landing the first overall selection.

"I've got to say I was a little bit nervous because we've done so much since the end of last season around building confidence around the club and doing things differently and changing the way things have been done in the past," he told cricket.com.au.

"One of the key things … was more structured selection of our overseas players and that was an area we'd fallen down.

"We've been pretty targeted on the kinds of players that we need and then it comes down to working through the nominations of who's in the pool and making sure that we get the right players.

"We've got three or four real needs for our team and we'll look to fill those needs with this player."

The BBL Draft will take place on Saturday, August 28 and will be broadcasted via Fox Sports and Kayo.
