Pakistan cricket great Imran Khan is among five people who have been left wounded by an alleged attempted assassination of the former Pakistan prime minister.

Khan was among the key figures leading a political rally in Wazirabad on Thursday, where an attack on Khan took place, with at least one person reported to have been killed.

Khan is currently recovering in hospital after being shot in the leg, while one man was arrested in the aftermath of the attack.

“(Khan) is in a stable condition,” Raoof Hasan, Khan's assistant, told AFP.

“This was an attempt to kill him, to assassinate him.”

The attacker has since been identified as Faisal Butt, with footage of Butt said to have confirmed his attempts on assassinating Khan.

“(Khan) was misleading the people, and I couldn't bear it so I attempted to kill him,” the suspect is alleged to have said.

“I tried my best to kill him. I wanted to kill Imran Khan only and no one else”.

Khan, 70, has since undergone surgery, while further people may be wounded as a result of the attack.

Khan is a former captain of the Pakistan cricket team, where he played in close to 90 Test matches and scored 3,807 runs and took 362 wickets to stamp his case as arguably the nation's greatest cricketer.

His time in office as Pakistan's prime minister ran from August, 2018 to April this year.
