Sydney Thunder star recruit David Willey has withdrawn from this season's Big Bash League.

The English star, who was recruited with the club's first pick in the international player draft earlier this year, has withdrawn from the competition by mutual agreement with the club.

It's unclear what has caused Willey to withdraw from the tournament at this time, with the club releasing a statement that gave little away.

“David and his management have been tremendous to deal with,” Andrew Gilchrist, the head of the Sydney Thunder said.

Sydney Thunder regrets David won't be playing for us this season, but we wish him and his family all the very best for the future.”

Willey was selected by the club for his ability with the ball, where he averaged 22.91 at an economy of under eight across his 241 T20 matches around the globe.

The 32-year-old has played everywhere from Australia to New Zealand, the Caribbean and IPL among a bundle of other competitions throughout his career.

The Sydney Thunder have confirmed they have already begun the process to replace Willey, with Alex Hales and Rilee Rossouw their other recruits from the international player draft.

“We've started the process, but Sydney Thunder boasts some incredible players on this summer's roster," Gilchrist said.

“Alex Hales has been a star for England's T20 World Cup campaign, and Rilee Rossouw proved while playing for South Africa how dangerous he can be,” said Gilchrist.

“We also have the best signing of the season in Dave Warner, while Jason Sangha, Chris Green, Tanveer Sangha, Ben Cutting, and Matthew Gilkes are among the best in the business.

“There is a lot for Thunder Nation to be excited about.”

The Sydney Thunder finished third in last year's BBL campaign, but lost their knockout final to the Adelaide Strikers.
