Cricket legend Shane Warne has looked to return serve to South Australian Chadd Sayers after the one-time Test pace bowler criticised the Aussie great's selection examinations.

Warne has been vocal in his own criticism of veteran Mitchell Starc, having questioned the fast bowler's initial selection for the opening Test of the summer.

The former Australian leg-spinner also denounced the selection of Usman Khawaja in place of the absent Travis Head for the fourth Test, with Warne believing Western Australian all-rounder Mitch Marsh should have been given the nod at No.5 in Justin Langer's batting order.

Khawaja was able to hush his doubters in style on Wednesday, amassing 137 runs in his return to international Test cricket.

The 35-year-old's stunning comeback prompted Sayers to take to social media to highlight Warne's current record of questionable selection calls.

"Shane Warne keeps bagging his own Aussie players. Went hard at Starc – Wrong and now Uzzie – wrong," Sayers wrote.

Warne looked to hit back at Sayers' comment, taking a swipe at the first-class star while looking to defend his own stance.

"Hey Champ – Saying you would prefer to bowl to Khawaja than Marsh is not bagging anyone," Warne responded.

"Ps I bowled spin. You bowled so called “pace.” The keeper stood in the same spot hahaha.

"PPS You would need a helmet bowling to M Marsh right now."
