England's fielding woes have been well documented this summer, and their extensive list of howlers continued on the fourth Test's opening session of day two at the SCG.

With the tourists looking to break the partnership of Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja, spinner Jack Leach looked set to claim the breakthrough as an edge from Khawaja's bat drifted toward Jos Buttler's gloves.

The English keeper was unable to seize the chance, deflecting the ball toward skipper and first slip fielder Joe Root.

Root was also unable to make the most of his own chance, dropping the ball after it fell into his lap following Buttler's fumble.

The frustrations for England - namely Leach and Root - continue to ascend amid another exasperating innings with ball in hand.

Australia were 3/186 at the point of England's dropped chances, with both Khawaja and Smith eyeing half-centuries to steer their nation further into favouritism.
